Fast and Furious 8 - Manaiakalani Film Festival 2017

Do you like fast cars? Have you seen any of the Fast and Furious movies? Who is your favourite character? Well the Year 7 & 8 Extension students wanted to create their own movie based on 'Fast and Furious 8'. They had a great time creating their movie and hope that you enjoy it!

Back in Da Day - Manaiakalani Film Festival 2017

Have you ever thought about what your parents did when they were kids? Life was very different back in the day. Technology has changed so much since when your parents and grandparents were kids. They didn't have access to cell phones, computers and the internet. Imagine if you had to live without technology.

Here is our Film Festival movie starring our Year 5 & 6 Extension students. It is based on their inquiry (Term 2) into how technology has changed over time and how it impacts our lives. Earlier this year they created a mini production called 'Back in Da Day'. Some of the dance footage is used in their movie. We hope you enjoy our movie!

Niue Language Week 2017

Last week on Friday the Niuean group performed at assembly as part of the Niue Language Week Celebrations. The theme for this year is 'Ko e Vagahau Niue, ko e atefua he tagata Niue'. This means that the Niue Language is the heart of Niue people.

The item began with a quick speech from Mrs Lagitupu. Then TJ gave a fantastic introduction followed by brief speeches from some of our Niuean students. Our Niuean girls danced to a Niuean song called 'Sipolo' by a group called the Island Pride Band and Glen Jackson. The boys finished with a takalo (haka). Thank you to our wonderful Niuean group and students for sharing their language and culture. Fakaue lahi!

OMGTech Workshop

Today groups of students from Years 3 to 8 enjoyed taking part in a workshop run by Kawana from OMGTech. During the workshop students learnt about how electricity flows in a basic circuit. They even got to create their own mini LED torch. Next students had the opportunity to use Makey Makey kits to create music and sounds on a coding programme called Scratch.

The students enjoyed the hands on experience.  We are grateful to Kawana, OMGTech and the group of volunteers from Microsoft for giving up their time to teach us.

Guardians of the Galaxy Immersion Assembly

On the first day back of each term our teachers always take part in immersion assembly. This could be in the form of a movie, play, or just by dressing up. The purpose of immersion assembly is to introduce the school wide theme for the term in an interesting way. It is always a way to 'hook' students into learning for the term and gives others an idea of what each team will be focusing on.

Our immersion assemblies are always interesting and entertaining. However this particular assembly for our theme 'Guardians of the Galaxy' was absolutely AWESOME! Here are some highlights.

Hidden Figures - Year 7 & 8 Extn Trip

On Wednesday the Year 7 & 8 Extension group went on a trip to watch 'Hidden Figures' at the Sylvia Park Movie theatre. We were lucky to have sponsors from Mr Vogt. His sisters loved the movie so much that they decided to do some fundraising so that a group of students from our school could go and watch the movie for free.

The movie itself was absolutely amazing. We learnt about how three African American women were able to overcome huge obstacles in their lives to work at and make a significant impact at NASA.

Review: HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle MonĂ¡e)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

Each year our whole school heads down to the Pt England reserve and beach for our annual school picnic. Last year we had to cancel at least 3 times due to the weather. However this year, the weather was beautiful! Thanks to all our teachers, staff and parent helpers for making it possible.

Paideia and Coding

The year 5 & 6 Extension students got the chance to work with Anne Sinclair this week who is an expert in the field of education. They were introduced to the Paideia method which is a way of learning that can provide opportunities for deep dialogic discussions. The process also helps to improve communication and critical thinking skills.

The Year 7 & 8 Extension students were introduced to the 'Scratch' programme. Scratch is a free programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations. The Scratch programme would be used as our introduction to coding and how this works. If you didn't know, coding is a list of step by step instructions that get computers to do what you want them to do. First of all the students worked through some of the tutorials which allow you to create your own game.

Visual Mihi's: Term 1 Week 2 2017

This week was the start of classes in the Creative Space and Maker Space. It was also the first week of extension classes for our Year Extension groups in Years 5 - 8.

The first task was the creation of Visual Mihi's by the Year 5 & 6 students. They had to draw images on Hyperstudio that represented who they were (e.g nationality) or what some of their hobbies were. They also had to write a brief explanation about how each picture represented a part of them.
